Real Italian, Right on 20th Avenue South

Giovanni Ristorante brings handcrafted Italian cooking and a serious wine program to Nashville's Belmont corridor.

About Us

Some restaurants serve food. Giovanni Ristorante serves an experience you notice the moment you walk through the door. Reviewers with 544 opinions between them consistently land on the same word: real. The room feels lived-in and warm, the kind of place where the waitstaff actually knows what's on the menu and will tell you why the pulpo is worth ordering tonight.

Situated on 20th Avenue South in the Belmont-Hillsboro neighborhood, Giovanni occupies that rare Nashville sweet spot where a date night and a Tuesday lunch can both feel exactly right. The kitchen doesn't cut corners on seasoning or timing, which is why proteins come out the way they should rather than the way they're easiest to cook. That consistency over hundreds of meals and thousands of guests is what a 4.3-star average actually looks like in practice.

The wine bar side of the operation is more than a wine list bolted onto a restaurant. It shapes the whole mood of the room, giving you a reason to linger after the plates are cleared and try something from a region you haven't explored yet. Giovanni is open every day of the week, so whether it's a spontaneous weeknight dinner or a planned weekend celebration, the door is open.

What We Offer

Giovanni's menu draws from the full breadth of the Italian table, not just the red-sauce greatest hits. Pasta is made with the kind of attention that shows up in the texture, seafood like the octopus is cooked to order rather than held, and the kitchen adjusts its offerings seasonally so there's always a reason to come back.

The wine bar program gives guests access to a curated selection of Italian and European bottles, available by the glass or bottle, with staff who can actually guide you through the list. Private dining and special occasion menus, including fixed chef's menus for holidays and events, are part of the experience for guests looking to mark a moment rather than just grab dinner.

Lunch service runs daily from 11:00 AM, making Giovanni one of the few full-service Italian restaurants in the neighborhood that takes the midday meal as seriously as dinner. On Fridays and Saturdays the kitchen stays open until 10:00 PM, giving the evening room to breathe.

"Really enjoyed the hospitable service and cozy atmosphere here. Waitstaff team was very attentive and helpful w the menu. The pulpa was cooked to perfection, aka not overdone, and well seasoned. The fresh pasta offerings were cooked properly and the ravioli was a hands down favorite at the table as all were sharing as we went. A very serviceable wine selection w good variety of price ranges from bottles in the old world. We had to run out to a catch a performance and this could not stay for cafes and desserts but wish we could have. Enjoy!"

"My girlfriend and I chose this restaurant for a Valentine’s Day dinner, expecting to order from the regular menu. Instead, we were presented with a fixed chef’s menu priced at $130 per person, with taxes and gratuity already included. Our total came to $337 — a cost that would have been acceptable had the experience matched the price. Unfortunately, it did not. Our server was noticeably cold and inattentive, hovering at the table in a way that made us feel rushed rather than welcomed. We were seated extremely close to another couple near the pianos, making conversation nearly impossible due to the noise level. The tables were positioned so tightly that reaching out would have meant touching the neighboring table. The food itself was inconsistent. My girlfriend’s appetizer consisted of a raw tomato paired with overcooked mozzarella, which was disappointing. While the remaining dishes were adequate, they did not justify the premium cost. Frankly, the value and satisfaction did not compare favorably to far more casual dining options. In hindsight, having access to the full menu might have improved the evening. While I take responsibility for not researching the holiday format in advance, the overall experience fell well short of expectations. The highlight of the night was simply the time spent with my girlfriend, rather than anything the restaurant provided."

"I finally made it to Giovanni Ristorante and it absolutely lived up to the reputation. This is one of those places where you can tell immediately you’re in for a real experience, not just a meal. The atmosphere is upscale without feeling pretentious, perfect lighting, great energy, and it actually feels like a proper date night or special occasion spot. The food was exactly what you want from a high end Italian restaurant. Everything tasted intentional and well executed, not overcomplicated. The pasta dishes were rich but balanced, and you can tell they’re using quality ingredients across the board. Definitely recommend going in ready to do multiple courses because it’s worth it. Service was a standout. Staff was attentive without hovering, knew the menu well, and made solid recommendations, especially on wine. You don’t feel rushed at all, they let you enjoy the full experience, which is rare. It’s not cheap, but it’s also not trying to be. You’re paying for the full package: food, service, atmosphere, and overall experience, and it delivers on all of it. If you’re looking for a legit fine dining Italian spot in Nashville for a date night, celebration, or to impress someone, this is one of the best options in the city. I’ll definitely be back."

"Our favorite Italian spot in Nashville. One of the few places that is on par with our favorite north end spots in NYC and Boston. The food is always exceptional and I appreciate that their menu remains relatively unchanged ( minus specials) and that they don't have a massive selection of items, instead they choose to focus on quality not quantity in regards to menu selection. It is pricey ( usually over $125 pp with wine) so be prepared for that and the portions aren't anything massive which is good considering it allows you to have multiple courses and not feel overly stuffed. The wine list is expansive with some great traditional and non traditional wines that you won't find anywhere else. Service is always too notch and they treat us well as regulars. We usually go earlier in the evenings so it's not busy but it can get lively later in the evenings. The live piano on the weekends adds a nice touch. The staff is great and have all been there for a long time which adds to the professionalism and servuce. Overall a great place for a special occasion or if you are just looking for the best Italian food in Nashville."
